~ Halloween Squad ~

Last year I made this sketch of my SSO sona Aster and their horses Ämdi and Boyle. Didn't have time to post it, but hey at least I can post a WIP now and finish it this year!

My oc Capri works as a seasonal construction worker and work for hire repair lady etc. Like during winter she shovels snow during the night with the truck (what ever is that job called) and during the summers she does other construction jobs. Basically all kind of outdoorsy jobs depending on the seasons. She is basically self employed and has a business trade name.

My sso!sona Aster studies foresting at Jarlaheim University of Applied Sciences and works part-time at the small local Jarlaheim cinema as a gallerist during holidays.

Starting with the most immediately obvious parts....

Bellflowers

GRARRR ITS BELLFLOWERS!!!! ITS BELLFLOWERS!!!!

Chinese Bellflowers, called "kikyou" in Japanese, are associated with and somewhat symbols of Abe no Seimei because of the pentagram shape, and Seimei's pentagram is also sometimes called "Seimei kikyou"

In other words, AAAAA BELLFLOWERS!!!!!!

Libra

This is Libra!! Not a whole lot to say about it, but there's a neat detail that the tippy point of the triangle (Beta Librae) is the brightest star in the constellation, and it's also represented by a more defined 4-pointed star here!

Cancer and Crux

Not much to say about Cancer, so lumping it in with Crux.

Crux, also known as the southern cross, is an asterism of four of the brightest stars in the southern hemisphere, and used for navigation similar to the north star.

There is also a northern cross (that's the "body" of Cygnus), but you can tell this is specifically the southern cross because the northern one has a star in the middle

Ursa Major

You can tell this is Ursa Major by the paw stars and the back leg! This is also the constellation that the big dipper is part of, which you may know from a previous rambles to be a big thing in Taoism and also associated with Abe no Seimei.

While we're on the topic of dippers...

There's this constellation that's covered by the G-Fantasy logo (that I didn't want to draw any definitive lines for) but I'm almost certain is the little dipper

What's the deal with the dippers anyway

Hey guys. remember when i lost my mind over the big/little dipper in my kyoto arc essay. still havent gotten over that.

So likeeee... the big dipper is the one classically associated with Taoism and Seimei. The little dipper doesn't really have much of an association with anything in that area, at most you could say its an extension of Polaris, the Big Boy North Star

Note the way the handles bend, the handle of the big dipper hooks down at the end. It's not as if this looks particularly different in different parts of the world, and you can see that every depiction of it irl is the way it is.

But consistently. Consistently. Sensei draws it with the handle bent the other way, aka looking more like the little dipper

Now there's a cute idea here that maybe the big dipper represents Seimei and the little dipper represents Haru. That's so cute! Unfortunately also just an idea. Because as you can see the little dipper is also there in Seimei's magic circle. So.

(Side tangent I swear at one point someone pointed out a principal art where its super clear that the mark on his face is Seimei's magic circle??? But now I can't find which art it is)

The Shichiseiken

Tangent-ception! I recently found out about the shichiseiken (seven star sword), named after the big dipper engraved on it. Originating in Chinese Taoism, it's said to drive away evil. There's been replicas and other versions afterwards, but the major one seems to be the one that had been reforged by Abe no Seimei after being destroyed.

(Though, none of these would be the one Ranmaru has, since his is double-edged and all these japanese swords are single-edged. And besides his just looks like a chinese sword anyway)

Couldn't identify these

too few identifying features on these two constellations sadly... they both Kinda look like they could be corvus.

Well. If it is corvus, and it represents Ranmaru, thats kinda cute. In that line of logic, cancer would be Sano, and libra could be either Hijita, Beniko or Renren (or all 3 lmao?)

NEW HORSE NAMES

This morning, SSO releases a bunch of new options for first and second horse names. I've tried to sort through and pull which are new.

Did I find out when I was 70% done that SSO had already made the list public and that all of my time was wasted? Yes, but I refuse admit my efforts were in vain.

i've always been pretty unaware of aspen's actual like... creation day. i don't consider their creation in line w my sso account (may 28 2015) so i honestly had no clue when i made them. anyway it was august 18 2020 back when they were named aster (then shilo, then somewhere we landed on aspen)

Truth in advertising: Beau (Joaquin Phoenix) is afraid, of nearly everything, including his domineering mother (Patti Lupone), whom he plans to visit very soon; sex (he was told his father, who had a heart murmur, died immediately upon his conception); accidentally drinking mouthwash; and much of the world outside his apartment, in the large fictionalized city of Corrina where he lives. To be fair, in Ari Aster's audaciously perverse jet-black comedy, Beau is shown over and over again to be fully justified with his many apprehensions.

The entrance hallway of his building is littered with garbage, scrawled graffiti on the walls ("Shoot the pope!"), and violent mayhem constantly going on just outside the front door. When Beau does leave -- say, for a meeting with his therapist (Stephen McKinley Henderson) -- he has to sprint down his street, hoping to avoid a deeply tattooed man who has it in for him for an unstated reason. The tattooed man isn't alone: Nearly everyone seems to have it in for poor, shy Beau, who does his level best to navigate these treacherous waters as best he can, even if it seems he can't escape peoples' fury and disdain.

The night before Beau is meant to fly out, he has trouble getting to sleep, exacerbated by an unseen neighbor who, with increasing anger, keeps slipping notes under his door telling him to turn down the music in his absolutely quiet apartment. This causes him to vastly oversleep, such that he wakes in a panic, trying to make his flight. One small mistake leads to another, and suddenly, he loses his suitcase and keys and inadvertently lets in a teeming mob of violent sociopaths into his apartment. He pitifully tries to sleep outside on a scaffolding, as his apartment and worldly possessions are actively being destroyed inside.

Aster is basically me. I don't have version for Capri tho. I also have headcanon that Aster sometimes buys horse potion from Ydris or Pi or human potion for Ämdi so that all three Aster, Ämdi and Boyle can have fun adventures in same form aka wild horsin around wild woods or having a city day at Jorvik city/ Jarlaheim.

But I also have SSO horse sona in game which is the gen 3 icelandic horse. Mane is the shorter messy one.

Ok you guys know how ydris turns us into a golden lusitano during the race against zee because a golden horse would be fancy for the circus?
